Weather wreaks havoc at South African Airport

On 16 November 2007 freak storms wreaked havoc to scheduled flights – leaving passengers stranded at Johannesburg International (or O.R TAMBO) airport in South Africa.
The 16th started out overcast and cold – not normal for a South African summer’s day. Traffic from Johannesburg’s northern suburbs towards the airport was slow from 3pm already – my car barely reached the 20km per hour mark. By 5pm a hailstorm hit Johannesburg and effectively halted all incoming and outgoing flights. Commuters on their way to the airport were forced to drive extremely slow or pull over as visibility was poor.
During the hailstorm in the airport building, the flight information boards started showing planes that should’ve landed being delayed. Then the dreaded departures delayed signs started coming up... and a long waiting period for would be passengers started.

Salt Rock accommodation
We arrived at the Seaside Lodge bed & breakfast quite late and the owners stayed up to welcome us. After we booked in, we we’re led up a set of stairs to the top floor where our room was situated. Our unit had its own 20+ square metre balcony with picnic table.
The door opened on a spacious room with tasteful decor of yellows, whites and blues. The bathroom was dolled up with a deep metal Victorian style bath tub and everything else in wood.

Sutherland
When in Sutherland take advantage of the high elevation and remoteness and enjoy some stargazing of your own. Amateur astronomers should either book a stargazing tour through the Sutherland Tourism Information Centre or if you are staying at the Kambrokind Guest house you can gaze through the owner's telescope after dinner. The Sutherland Observatory houses the larges telescope in the southern hemisphere, the Southern African Largest Telescope (SALT). The construction of this telescope was a joint initiative between the governments and academic institutions of South Africa, Poland, USA and Germany. It was decided that it would be placed in Sutherland on account of its dark skies, the distance from the bright lights of the city and its pollution free air. You can go on a tour of the observatory daily except on Fridays.

Kaross - Letsitele
Kaross is definitely worth a visit. It is in the Letsitele valley started in 1989. Kaross is an embroidery initiative that started five Shangaan embroiders and Irma van Rooyen, a visual artist, as creative director and founder. Sitting on a Kaross(which is a blanket) the ladies started creating works of art own to themselves and their cultural background. The objective was to create pieces of excellent quality, and a fresh approach to handwork. Over the past years Kaross became the voice of 1000+ Shangaan people and their communities in the Letsitele/Giyani area of the Limpopo Province. Kaross is re-writing a culture by exploring its heritage and re-applying it to modern, marketable products and artworks.

Augrabies Falls National Park
The word Augrabies is derived from the Khoi word meaning place of great noise; these falls are the sixth larges in the world. This is also were the Orange River is at its most powerful.
Few sights are as awesome or a sound as deafening as water thundering down the 56m Augrabies Waterfall when the Orange River is in full flood.
When going to Augrabies do expect hot summers and cold nights during winter. Expect to get wet during January to April as this is the rainy season. But the best time to visit will be during March to October because this is the most pleasant months in the park.

Sossusvlei is one of Southern Namibia's most popular tourist destinations in the heart of the Namib Desert, is a huge clay pan, enclosed by giant sand dunes. The word "vlei" is an Afrikaans word that means "marsh" and Sossusvlei is in a small valley between the dunes which sometimes gets snow! It is well known for its colossal dunes that vary in colour from red to apricot to orange. They are at their highest where the Tsauchob river flows into the vlei and once the rains(and this does not happen very often) fill the main pan you can catch a glimpse of flamingos and other bird species in the area.

Limpopo
Limpopo is on the surface broad and boundless, a landscape tanning itself in the heat of the African sun. If you look beyond this you will find the ancient lands, attested by Makapansgat Caves near Mokopane (Potgietersrus) just two hours from Gauteng and an ideal stopover point en route to Botswana or Zimbabwe or even the Kruger National Park) and then the past lives on in the baobab which is considered the upside down tree uprooted and cast back to earth by angry gods.
Limpopo can offer the tourists a variety of experiences that only a few other destinations can match, its got everything from mountainous splendor, winding rivers and wildlife to cultural heritage sites, traditional food and adrenalin rushing adventures throughout the year.

Ai Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier National Park
This park does a lot to preserve this bio-diverse area even if it looks like a desert at first glance. It looks desolate but look carefully and you will see that this park is home to a range of animal species. Don't try to enter the park without your 4x4 vehicle or at least a vehicle with high clearances such as a minibus or van because you are going to pick up some real trouble. Before you enter the park get admission and overnight permits at the park office at Sendelingsdrift.
Rugged kloofs, high mountains and dramatic landscapes that sweep away inland from the Orange River tell you that you are now in the vast mountain desert that is the Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier National Park.

Haenertsburg is a picturesque village between Polokwane and Tzaneen. This village originated as a gold rush town in 1887 and remains of the old workings can still be seen today. This area is surrounded by crystal clear mountain air, mountain peaks, tumbling waterfalls, tranquil lakes and magnificent indigenous forests.
There are several hiking tails in the area where you could quietly walk and maybe encounter some antelope, bush pigs, baboons, samango monkeys or even the rare caracal cat. The bird life is abundant and therefore it is famous as a bird watchers paradise.

Kwazulu Natal
Well what can I say other than that the coast of Natal is a surfer's paradise! There are ride able waves everywhere, including hollow beach breaks, points (mainly right-handers) and a few classic reef breaks. The water temperature is warm all year round. On hot days in summer and winter you will be quite comfortable surfing in baggies. The most consistent surf is to be found in the winter months, from May through to August, mainly due to the cold fronts that sweep up the coast from the Cape, bringing solid six to eight-foot swells. In these conditions all the point breaks along the coast will be firing. You will find good clean surf most mornings during winter as a gentle land breeze blows straight off-shore. In summer the swell tends to be a bit smaller with fun surf available at the many beach breaks. In summer the best time to surf at this time of the year is during light south-westerlies or early in the morning before the north-eastern starts to blow.

Salt Rock , The Beach Cottages - South Africa
Arriving at the self-catering cottages for my annual pre-December getaway break I was pleasantly surprised to find that these holiday rental cottages are situated right on the beach.
The vacation rental establishment is situated right on Salt Rock’s Beach. The accommodation offered consists of small rondawels or cottages. This is self catering accommodation units.
-
This was my first time staying in Salt Rock and I must admit – I really liked this little town on the Kwazulu Natal North Coast (or Dolphin Coast) with its pristine beaches, relaxed atmosphere and the warm Indian Ocean to swim in.
Where is Salt Rock?
• Salt Rock is about 40 minutes’ drive from Durban’s International Airport on the North Coast (or Dolphin Coast).

Hiking in Lesotho
Lesotho is definitely a hiker's paradise. Lesotho has no organised hiking trails but on the other hand it doesn't need any since the entire country is a network of bridle and foot paths. The people in Lesotho walk as a means of getting from one point to another. You will also not find a single fence in the mountains; there is total freedom of access. What that means is that you can hike anywhere you like in Lesotho. And, since the whole country is mountainous, wherever you choose will have its own beauty.

Nashua Mobile - why you should think twice before signing up with them
Last weekend I put a stop order on my account to stop Nashua Mobile from being tempted to dedeuct money from my account. Unfortunately this did not work as Nashua Mobile changed their reference name they use for deductions.
Since I have an email from Carol Ndlovu saying that my contract has now been canceled with Nashua Mobile I was angry as hell to put it mildly.
I phoned Nashua Mobile immediatly after discovering the deduction and demanded my money back... so lets wait and see if this will happen.

How much do you know about South Africa and its regions?
Ok, so you are a South African, but exactly how much do you know about South Africa?
Read some interesting facts about South Africa here. I'm sure you will find at least one thing you didn't know about South Africa.
Ever wondered how people live in Polokwane (the former Pietersburg)? I was quite surprised to find out just how many great restaurants there is in Polokwane. I have also had the pleasure of staying at some accommodation establisments in Polokwane. For things to do and see in and around the old Pietersburg - read this article about game farms in the limpopo province.
Since we're on the subject of places and things to do in Limpopo... read some travel tips on how to get around.
I bet you you don't know why Mooketsi is such an important farming community - right? Well, it is where ZZ2 grow tomatoes! Learn about this area called Mooketsi in the Limpopo Province.
Remember the day that South Africa got ready for a tornado? I do - especially the inconvenience caused by the traffic jams in the middle of the day. If you don't know what I'm talking about - then maybe you should read about what happened in Johannesburg on that day. Read about this Johannesburg weather related article.
Obviously I live in Johannesburg, South Africa and love it when I can drive to a place like Gold Reef City and spent a day on the rides. Then again, I also went to see an international cricket match the other day at the Wanderers in a box and that was absolutely amazing!

Get paid to blog!
I'm not joking. I actually write articles and get paid for them. The articles have to be at least 400 words with 1 picture and I get paid $5 for each of them. Plus you have to write a minimum of 15 articles a month which makes the minimum payout $75 per month!
Fortunately there are no limit to the amount of articles you can submit so you could earn a whole lot more if you are motivated.
How will you get paid?
- Sign up for this "get paid for blogging" gig
- Open a moneybookers account (as Paypal don't let South Africans get payouts via them)
- Start writing about the subjects that interest you and earn some good extra money!
Want to read some blogs to get an idea of what I'm talking about? Click here.
